Access Justice (AJ) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization and public interest law firm dedicated to providing a wide range of quality and affordable legal services to low- and moderate- income working-class individuals. Due to our continued growth, AJ is often in need of experienced, highly qualified and committed professionals to join the organization in fulfilling our unique mission of assisting underserved people of Minnesota. Please inquire about current openings which may include the following:
Family Law Attorney—the person in this position is responsible for assuming an existing caseload as well as providing a wide range of legal services to new clients. The successful candidate will possess the following experience and skills:
- Juris Doctorate and active admission to the Minnesota bar;
- Experience with family law issues, preferably, five (5) years or more, including trial experience;
- Excellent legal writing and oral advocacy skills;
- Strong background in working with complex family cases that include issues of domestic abuse, mental health, addiction, and other family dysfunctions;
- Experience in the current modes of mediation, including some familiarity with ICMC, ENE, FENE, and other ADR processes; and
- Some experience with additional areas of practice, preferably dealing with issues of poverty law (e.g., government benefits, housing, criminal expungements, bankruptcy, civil rights, etc.)
Senior Attorney/Director of Legal Services—The person in this role will be responsible for the management for all aspects of legal services at Access Justice. Job duties are distributed across three (3) areas:
- Guiding and assisting staff attorneys, as well as volunteer and independent contract attorneys, paralegals and law clerkson matters such as case strategy development, quality assurance, and risk management;
- Working as the lead attorney on a wide variety of cases;
- Assisting in the development of policy and procedures, marketing plans, employee recruitment &retention, and professional staff management.
- Attend civil mediation training for qualification
The successful candidate will possess the following experience and skills:
- Juris Doctorate and active admission to the Minnesota bar;
- Significant experience as a hands-on attorney, preferably at least seven (7) to ten (10) plus years, to include serving low-income clients and experience in a variety of areas of law: civil, family, criminal, and bankruptcy issues;
- Desirably, some experience in providing legal assistance to low-income clients;
- Experience managing and mentoring other attorneys, paralegals and law clerks;
- Experience working with people in crisis or other high-stress situations;
- Excellent case management skills and attention to detail;
- Familiarity with data management systems for small and/or public interest law firms
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a good sense of humor
Criminal Attorney—the person in this position is responsible for assuming an existing caseload as well as providing a wide range of legal services to new clients. The successful candidate will possess the following experience and skills:
- Juris Doctorate and active admission to the Minnesota bar;
- Significant experience as a hands-on criminal law attorney, preferably seven (7) to ten (10) plus years, including trial experience;
- Desirably, some experience in providing legal assistance to low-income clients in a variety of other areas of law including: civil; family; housing; civil rights; government benefits; employment and banking issues;
- Experience managing and mentoring other attorneys, paralegals and law clerks;
- Experience working with people in crisis or other high-stress situations;
- Solid case management skills and attention to detail;
- Familiarity with data management systems for small and/or public interest law firms
- Excellent interpersonal skills and a good sense of humor
Associate Executive Director- the person in this key management position will be responsible for helping to manage all aspects of AJ”s operations and to develop and maintain a broad development program aimed at solidifying broadening the delivery of our legal services programs.
Duties:
- Assisting the Executive Director in the execution of his daily duties, including:
- Managing daily schedule and maintaining an accurate calendar;
- Providing broad outreach to underserved low-income communities
- Establishing and maintaining organized files;
- Data entry;
- Shredding or recycling various documents as required or appropriate;
- Willingness to work long hours when necessary to get the job done and drive to see tasks through to completion;
Skills:
- Highly organized individual with close attention to details, including experience with filing systems;
- Excellent time management skills with competing priorities;
- Ability to meet deadlines;
- Self-starter, ability to work well both independently and as part of a team;
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including proper spelling and grammar in the English language, and attention to issues of style;
- Strong office skills, including familiarity and experience with technology, such as internet search engines; the Microsoft Office suite of software; copiers, fax machines and scanners;
- Good interpersonal skills, including a sense of humor, ability to resolve or diffuse conflicts, and experience with people from diverse backgrounds;
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment.
Office Manager- This person is a key member of AJ’s management team and will be responsible for smoothly managing the day-to-day operations of Access Justice.
Duties:
- Maintains office services by organizing office operations and procedures; preparing payroll; controlling correspondence; designing filing systems; review and approving supply requisitions; assigning and monitoring clerical functions, establishing and maintaining data management systems;
- Provides historical reference by defining procedures for retention, protection, retrieval, transfer and disposal of records;
- Maintains office efficiency by planning and implementing office systems, layouts and equipment procurement and maintenance;
- Designs and implements office policies by establishing standards and procedures; measuring results against standards; making necessary adjustments;
- Screens incoming calls initially from potential clients and coordinates with attorneys and paralegals;
- Keeps management team informed by reviewing and analyzing special reports; summarizing information; identifying trends;
- Maintains office staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees.
- Proficient in computer programs and data base management. Maintains professional and technical knowledge;
- Excellent writing, typing and proofreading skills;
- Strong public relations ability. Good understanding of nonprofit management; social justice commitment;
- Performing and overseeing special projects as assigned;
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

Law Clerk- Tasks include:
- Conducting research projects;
- Assisting attorneys in drafting legal documents;
- Partaking in client interviews and courtroom hearings on a variety of legal issues, primarily family law, immigration, housing, civil rights, employment law and criminal defense;
- Potential client intake calls, conflicts of interest checks, following up with clients, as well as updating and compiling client tracking data;
- And assist in various administrative items, such as, updating attorney billings, facilitating social media output, blogging and website updates, maintaining schedules, and general clerical pieces.
Legal Intern- The person in this position is responsible for assisting administrative and legal staff. An intern’s task list will primarily include:
- Taking potential new client calls;
- Uploading data to the server and client tracking software;
- Writing reports;
- Assisting in grant writing and applications;
- Participating in research and legal writing projects;
- Supporting attorneys, law clerks and administrative staff as necessary;
- And assisting with other various legal, clerical and administrative work.
